Our Journey and Mission

Founded in 2022, the Mehari Centre emerged from a pressing community need to support Eritrean newcomers in Ottawa. Our mission is to enhance the well-being of Eritreans through culturally and linguistically tailored programs. We are committed to providing a safe space where individuals can access vital resources, connect with others, and find healing and essential services.

Bridging Service Gaps

Our Story: A Community Initiative

The Mehari Centre was established to address the systemic service gaps that Eritrean newcomers face in Ottawa. As a nonprofit driven by community needs, we offer programs that are both culturally and linguistically appropriate. Our dedicated team, led by an Executive Director and a volunteer Board, is focused on fostering a strong, healthy, and connected Eritrean community.

Overcoming Barriers

Addressing Service Gaps

Many Eritrean newcomers face significant challenges in accessing essential services in Canada. Language barriers, particularly the lack of Tigrinya-speaking support, make it difficult for them to find settlement resources, secure housing, access food assistance, and navigate mental health services. The Mehari Centre is committed to bridging these gaps by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate programs that cater to the unique needs of the Eritrean community in Ottawa.

Our centre serves as a vital resource, offering tailored programs that assist Eritrean newcomers to overcome these obstacles. By advocating for increased access to essential services, we ensure that community members can successfully integrate into Canadian society, fostering a sense of belonging and community connection.

Through our dedicated efforts, we aim to create a supportive environment where Eritrean newcomers can thrive, equipped with the necessary tools and resources to build a better future for themselves and their families.
